Winners: John Davies/Eurig Davies (Vauxhall Astra)
John Davies confirmed his reputation for fast driving on rough tracks when he and navigator Eurig Davies took a commanding win on the Classic Tracks Rally.
The event, running for the sixth time as a daylight road rally, used a series of farm tracks to provide a competitive 100 mile route. However it proved a tough challenge as only a third of the 75 starters made the Finish. The mixture of intermingled dry and slippery surfaces took a toll on drive and prop shafts.
The winners led from the middle of the rally’s first section. A brief visit to a hedge on one track didn’t stop them building up a lead of a minute by the petrol halt, they went on to double this margin by the Finish. Martyn O’Connor/Aled Jones took the runner up spot, having lost time on two occasions when they became stuck.
Arwyn Thomas/Richard Hughes took third, while Mike Roberts/Rob Duke made up for an early exit on last year’s event by finishing fourth. Dorian Evans/Joanna Bond finished fifth and took the Semi-Expert Class win.
Top seeds Byron Jones/James Morgan were sixth after dropping six minutes when they wrong slotted on the final test before Petrol.
