Winners: Jim Deacon/Dave Wilson (MGB Roadster)
Jim Deacon/Dave Wilson emerged from a tight day-long battle for the lead to take their second win in three years on the Leukaemia Historic Rally.
The event, Round Three of the HRCR Clubmans Championship, saw crews tackle 16 tests, 12 of which were at Caerwent. There were also five regularity sections in the route, including an opener through the Cwmcarn Forest Drive.
Top seeds Jonathan Hancox/Richard Lambley had led the field at the first break of the day, but by the lunch halt Paul Hernaman/Andy Gibson had moved to the front. The tests at Caerwent followed lunch and after these Keith Colman/David Taylor had taken the lead, however their advantage was just four seconds, with Deacon/Wilson breathing down their neck. The eventual winners finally hit the front on the penultimate test and retained the position to the Finish.
A large penalty for being 50 seconds early on the final regularity saw Colman/Taylor fall to third behind Hernaman/Gibson at the Finish.
Thirty-six crews finished the rally, amongst those that didn’t was the Alfa Romeo of David Mustarde/Mike Burrows who sustained damage when they hit a tree in Caerwent. John Tatlow/Julie Westwood had been in sixth position when their Saab suffered diff failure in the morning.
