Winners: Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes (VW Golf GTi)
The stranglehold that Escorts have held on this year’s Welsh Championship was finally broken on Saturday night when Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes took their VW Golf to victory on the Breidden. The pair had been in third place at Petrol but powered through to win by over a minute as others hit trouble.
Richard Jerman/Iwan Jones had led at the halfway point but retired with a failed head gasket soon after the restart.
The battle for the WAMC drivers’ title came to a head on the rally. Daniel Jones, who had Dale Furniss navigating, retired early on when a stub axle broke. This put an end to Jones’ championship hopes. Meirion Evans and Gethin Morgan were thus left to fight for the honour. Remarkably the two finished with exactly the same penalties and a tiebreak was invoked. Their times on the first section were also the same, so the matter was decided by their penalty on the second section. This put Evans in front of Morgan and, subject to confirmation, secures the Wales Motorsport proprietor the championship.
Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Steve Price had been expected to feature but withdrew after losing a large amount of time when their jack broke as they changed a puncture.
