Winners: Neil Weaver/Sam Collis (Renault Clio)
Neil Weaver/Sam Collis, a crew better known for their stage exploits, showed the road rally circus a clean pair of heels as they won the 1000 Lanes Road Rally. It was only Weaver’s third road event.
Punctures played a significant part during the rally. Meirion Evans/Iwan Jones had led by over a minute at Petrol but then lost four minutes when they had to change a tyre in the second half. They finished third but still took maximum Welsh Championship points. Similarly Richard Jerman/Lowri Davies dropped the same amount of time for the same reason in the first half. They recovered from 12th place at Petrol to fifth at the Finish.
Jon Gwilym/Neil Spiers took the runner up spot on the driver’s home ground, although it was Spiers’ first visit to the area for 30 years.
Kevin Davies/Dale Bowen were on the leaders’ pace on the opening sections before a broken axle brought their Escort to a halt.
An eighth place finish was enough to keep Llyr Williams/Ceri Hughes at the head of the Welsh Championship table at the halfway point in this year’s series. Notably however Evans/Jones now have three sets of maximum points from their five outings.
