Telor Pugh/Max Freeman came from the reserve list to win the Holrus Targa Rally on Sunday. The event used a series of farm tracks, plus a run through the office site of the under-construction Newtown by-pass, to provide crews with 30 miles of hot and dusty competition in 17 tests.
Mark Lennox/Ian Beamond led initially but were passed by the eventual winners shortly before the petrol halt. After the restart Pugh’s committed driving style pulled him clear of the field and he and Freeman came home almost a minute clear. Dafydd ‘Post’ Evans/Carl ‘Slate’ Jones, winners of the previous weekend’s Dyffryn Twymyn, overhauled Lennox/Beamond with two tests remaining to secure the runner spot.
Dale Furniss/Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts were an early casualty; their Golf, which had won the Best Presented Car award, succumbed to fuel pump problems after just four tests. They were not alone, only 39 of the 74 starters made the Finish.RESULTS
