Llandovery was the base once again for Epynt MC's Powys Lanes, the final round of the Welsh Championship. The 76 starters faced a demanding 110 mile route.
With the Welsh series titles secured with two rounds to spare, Arwel Hughes Jones and Dylan John Williams were not amongst the contenders.
From the start at the Castle Car Park, the first section looped down to Myrtle Hill before heading back up to Halfway. There were three timing points. Most of the field were late at the first control, although five crews were on time, these were George Williams/Cadog Davies, Richard Jerman/Alan James, Gareth Wyn Jones/Ryan Griffiths, Rob Stephens/Hefin Jones and Arwyn Jones/Mathew Pryce.
All were late at the third time control. Williams/Davies were the fastest of the leaders here, fourteen seconds ahead of Jerman/James and Jones/Pryce, who were tied for second.
The second section, which used the Epynt Dual Carriageway, was cleaned by virtually the whole field, although some picked up penalties for booking in early.
The third section was a lengthy one, starting south of Trecastle, it ran through Glasfynydd Forest and finished at Pont-ar-Hydfer.
Jerman/James and Jones/Pryce were alone in cleaning the first part, so remained tied for second, but were now four seconds closer to Williams/Davies. All lost time at the final control, with Williams/Davies and Jerman/James sharing the best time, ten seconds ahead of Jones/Pryce.
Significant time was lost by everyone on Section Four, which made good use of the double triangles by the Red Kite Feeding Centre at Talsarn and then the twisty lanes around Twynllanan. There was a nip and tuck battle between Williams/Davies and Jerman/James, with the former being a second quicker at TC 4D, but the latter gaining two seconds back at TC 4E. This left the two crews eleven seconds apart. Meanwhile Jones/Pryce had fallen six seconds behind Gareth Wyn Jones/Ryan Griffiths, who were now in third, 46 seconds off the lead.
The fifth section, which started at Pont Newydd and finished at Llwyndu, didn't trouble the three crews at the top of the field, although Jones/Pryce dropped further back as they were 38 seconds late at the second TC. Also on this section, Mark Lennox/Ian Beamond, who had been in eighth place, missed a code board, which added five minutes to their total.
The first half concluded with a tight four minuter around Dyffryn Ceidrych. The entire field dropped time here. Williams/Davies were the quickest, they were four seconds late at TC6B, eight seconds ahead of Jones/Pryce.
Petrol was taken near Ashfield and results there showed that Williams/Davies held a 36 second lead over Jerman/James. However, the latter pair withdrew at the halt as their Escort had developed a severe misfire. Their departure meant that the leaders were over a minute ahead of Jones/Griffiths, with Jones/Pryce a further 36 seconds back.
Two further short four minuters around Felindre and Cwmdu started the second half, the first caught everyone for time. Williams/Davies were once again fastest, five seconds ahead of Jones/Pryce, which moved the latter to within 21 seconds of Jones/Griffiths.
The next dropper, TC 9E, was near Mynydd Llansadwrn. Although it was cleaned by Williams/Davies and Jones/Pryce, everyone else was late. Rob Stephens/Hefin Jones fell from fifth to seventh after booking in a minute early at TC 9D; with double penalties for early arrivals, this added two minutes to their total.
The tenth and final section was a 15 miler and had two controls at which most were late, although, once again, Williams/Davies and Jones/Pryce were clean that the first of these, TP 10B. This drew the latter crew level for second place with Jones/Griffiths; however, they were 1m 43s behind the leaders.
The last dropper was the penultimate control, TC 10F at Llettyrhaflaeth, All were late here. Williams/Davies extended their lead to almost two minutes as they were fifteen seconds quicker than Jones/Pryce. Critically the Barcud winners were fifteen seconds ahead of Jones/Griffiths, putting them in a clear second place.
At the Finish it appeared that Williams/Davies had taken a dominant win, finishing 1m58s ahead of Jones/Pryce, however, an official had spotted the leading Escort receiving outside assistance earlier in the event and the pair were disqualified from the results. Despite this non-finish both Williams and Davies secured second place in the Welsh Championship.
It was therefore Arwyn Jones/Mathew Pryce who came through to secure their second WAMC win of the year; they finished fifteen seconds ahead of Gareth Wyn Jones/Ryan Griffiths. Mathew Davies/Jamie Mills took the final podium place, a minute off the lead, but a minute and a half ahead of fourth placed Gareth Price/Sam Spencer, who broke the Escort stranglehold with their BMW 318Ti.
Cilwendeg winners, Gethin Dafis/Dion Lewis were fifth, which was enough for them to take third place in the Welsh Championship. Sixth place was secured by the leading Expert crew, Phillip Jenkins/Lewis Jenkins.
Joseph Thomas/Mathew Phillips led the Semi-Expert Class throughout the night and finished in twelfth place, five minutes ahead of their nearest class rivals. Similarly, Eurwyn Davies/Iorwerth Williams were the front running Novices for most of the event and secured that category win.
